Il progetto Andrill vede protagonisti vari centri di ricerca Italiani (CNR, Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, l'Università di Siena), università e centri di ricerca Americani, Neo Zelandesi e Tedeschi.

&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;L'obiettivo del progetto “Offshore New Harbor” è quello di ottenere una documentazione sul volume del ghiaccio e sui cambiamenti climatici che si sono verificati nel Mare di Ross occidentale durante il periodo caldo (55-34 milioni di anni fa, MA) e in tutta la transizione verso la glaciazione successiva ( Ma 34-25). Questa ricerca è fondamentale per la nostra comprensione del ruolo della Antartide nel passato così come nel futuro dei cambiamenti climatici, dal momento che è stato durante questo intervallo di tempo (40-25 MA) che la percentuale di CO2 è stata alta quanto è previsto per questo secolo (cfr. L'obiettivo della spedizione è quello di utilizzare questi dati geofisici per valutare la storia sedimentaria di questa zona, nell’ipotesi di sviluppare una strategia di perforazione per recuperare questi sedimenti. Il ritmo calcolato è dello 0,6% nell’arco di un decennio e siamo vicini al record di 20 milioni di chilometri quadrati toccato nel 1970.&lt;br /&gt;Nello stesso tempo, questo settembre potrebbe battere il record della minima estensione dei ghiacci dell’Artico, record registrato appena un anno fa, con la definitiva apertura del passaggio a Nord-Ovest e la possibilità di circumnavigare il Polo Nord passando al di sopra delle coste di Canada, Alaska, Groenlandia e Siberia.&lt;br /&gt;Per i climatologi questa apparente stranezza non è difficile da spiegare e non smentisce il riscaldamento globale del pianeta.&lt;br /&gt;La differenza fondamentale è che l’Artico è una distesa di ghiaccio che galleggia sull’Oceano e risente quindi molto del calore portato da venti e correnti che provengono da Sud. L’Antartide invece è un continente, con un proprio clima.  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;A ridosso del mare di Ross e per tutta la larghezza del continente si erge la catena Transantartica.&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;La principale caratteristica di questa catena montuosa sono gli scuri pendii di dolerite, una instrusione orizzontale di basalti sopra le rocce chiamate “basamento di Beacon”. Lo spessore di questo strato è dell’ordine dei 500 metri, è uno strato molto regolare che si estende per una lunga distanza. E’ datato tra i 147 e i 163 milioni di anni fa.&lt;/p&gt;     &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Invece il cosiddetto “basamento di Beacon” è costituito da sedimenti orizzontali di sabbie e altro (quindi prevalentemente arenarie) di fiumi e laghi accumulatisi durante un lunghissimo periodo di tempo tra i 400 e i 200 milioni di anni fa.&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Il nome di arenarie di Beacon fu dato da H. T. Ferrar il geologo della spedizione di Scott (1901-04).&lt;/p&gt;     &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Nel video è documentato il volo in elicottero sopra il ghiacciaio di Ferrar per raggiungere la Beacon Valley, una delle Dry Valley, posta a circa 1300-1400 metri di altitudine.&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Le Dry Valley sono chiamate così per la quasi assenza di precipitazioni, prevalentemente dovute al loro orientamento rispetto alla catena e alle precipitazioni provenienti dall’oceano.&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Le lingue glaciali che scendono dal plateau non hanno acque di fusione e infatti non sono presenti morene frontali.&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Altra caratteristica delle Dry Valley il suolo “poligonato”….il suolo arido, ma comunque congelato, assume delle configurazioni a poligoni, ben visibili dall’alto.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;object width="320" height="266" style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;La fauna ittica della regione antartica è limitata a sole 274 specie, 49 famiglie. Nonostante che l’oceano meridionale rappresenti il 10% dell’oceano della terra, questa regione ospita solo l’1% della fauna ittica del mondo che è costituita da 25000 specie.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;La fauna antartica è dominata da tre discendenze: Lipariti (snailfishes – “pesci soffici”), Zoarcidi (eelpouts, “pesci labbrone”), sia bentonici che di grandi profondità, e Nototenioidi.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Nototenioidi&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Sono il 35% delle specie e nelle acque sotto il ghiaccio il 46% e occupano gli habitat sia del fondo che della colonna d’acqua. Questa eccezionale saturazione di biomassa da parte di un singolo gruppo è attribuibile al fatto che occupano nicchie di solito occupate da gruppi diversi nelle acque temperate. L’ambiente antartico è caratterizzato da basse temperature, alte differenze stagionali, scarsità di cibo soprattutto durante gli scuri mesi invernali.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Queste condizioni richiedono speciali adattamenti al congelamento, la necessità di accumulare riserve energetiche durante i mesi estivi, strategie di “risparmio energetico” (comportamenti di stare fermi e aspettare), metabolismo basso e cicli riproduttivi stagionali….&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Due domande: quando è iniziato questo successo evolutivo e perché proprio questo gruppo?&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;L’isolamento dell’Antartide dagli altri continenti ha comportato un generale raffreddamento delle acque dai 16° del tardo Eocene, con fasi alterne, ma con una linea di tendenza si è arrivati ai 4-5° del tardo Miocene, per cadere bruscamente poi ai valori polari attuali (circa -2°C).&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;L’estinzione di una intera fauna è associabile sia al precipitare delle temperature sia alla perdita degli habitat dovuti a questa ampia glaciazione.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;In base alla teoria dell’evoluzione gli antenati di questi pesci dovevano possedere qualche caratteristica genetica più favorevole all’adattamento e sembra che questa caratteristica sia rintracciabile nell’evoluzione dell’emoglobina di questi pesci.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;La loro capacità di ossigenazione è molto particolare. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Hanno solo il 10% del plasma che normalmente ha un pesce a sangue rosso, e questo adattamento è favorevole perchè riduce il liquido all'interno del corpo, in ambiente di acqua fredda che risulta più ossigenata per la sua bassa temperatura. Comunque questi pesci sono riusciti a sintetizzare, nella loro evoluzione, alcune proteine funzionanti come antigelo.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Ovviamente il sole non è facilmente fotografabile: si trova esattamente dietro il cartello che indica la base neo zelandese Scott.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Come mai, pur essendo così a lungo illuminato nei mesi da settembre a marzo il ghiaccio ne risente così poco? Ogni due persone hanno un sacco di emergenza (tenda, saccopelo, necessario per cucinare, viveri).&lt;br /&gt;In Antartide ogni volta che si esce sufficientemente lontano dalla base bisogna essere autonomi per almeno due giorni.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il sito è diviso in due parti lontane tra loro quattrocento metri: la torre e i container laboratorio,  il villaggio con i container alloggio - mensa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In questa pagina si entra nei laboratori dove la carota lunga 6 metri, viene tagliata in cilindri da 1 metro, fotografata per tutta la superficie laterale con un apposito scanner, e inscatolata per il successivo trasporto con l'elicotterro. Scott che arrivò qui nel 1901 con 25 uomini di equipaggio.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rimasero due anni nel tentativo, fallito, di arrivare al polo sud.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nel filmato si vede il panorama del mare di Ross, ancora ghiacciato (1 novembre - ore 1.30 del mattino).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Si possono vedere le tipiche incrostazioni del ghiaccio marino molto pericolose da percorrere in quanto possono crepacciarsi da un momento all'altro, o cedere sotto il vostro peso se la stagione estiva si sta avvicinando.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Le macchie più scure, che assorbono di più la luce, è appunto ghiaccio trasparente, non ricoperto da neve.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La croce di legno è stata eretta dagli uomini di Scott nel 1902 per ricordare un loro compagno scivolato nell'oceano in quella estate, durante una tempesta, il cui corpo non è mai stato ritrovato.&lt;br /&gt;E' il primo deceduto della baia di Mc Murdo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
